LO: Comparing area
Watch: https://vimeo.com/501678823
Today you are going to be thinking about the sizes of different areas and which are smaller or bigger.
You will need to count the squares carefully.
As the task gets harder, you will need to count half squares as well.
Question 6 is pretty tricky so just do questions 1-5 if you aren’t feeling too confident.
There is a support task that you might prefer to do.
Mark your work with the answer sheets.
If you want a challenge, have a go at the Area challenge sheets.
These are for today and tomorrow.
Tuesday 02.02.21
LO: END OF UNIT ASSESSMENT (AREA)
Complete the end of unit assessment as best you can.
- Try to work independently
- Read each question 3 times
- Show your working out
- Move onto the next one if you are stuck
- Come back to any you haven’t answered at the end
Mark your work with the answer sheet.
Challenge – continue with the sheets from yesterday.
Wednesday 03.02.21
New Topic - Fractions
LO: Recap Unit and non-unit fractions
Watch: https://vimeo.com/502315136
Today we are thinking about fractions of shapes to start with.
From question 6, the questions start to get harder so just work through questions 1-5 if you are not too confident with it.
Remember - A unit fraction is any fraction with 1 as its numerator (top number), and a whole number for the denominator (bottom number).
Alternatively, you can try the support task:
- Count the number of sections overall.
- Count the number of shaded sections.
- This will give you your fraction.
- For example, if there are 6 sections and 4 are shaded in, your fraction will be 4/6.
- Check your work with the answer sheet and make any corrections.
Challenge - Have a go at the quiz on: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z6cbhcw
if you have access to a screen still, or have a go at the challenge sheet, If you need some time away from a screen.
Thursday 04.02.21
LO: What is a fraction?
Watch: https://vimeo.com/502527306
This is a continuation of fractions, similar to yesterday but starting to get a bit more tricky.
Think about what you learnt yesterday with unit fractions and fractions of shapes.
Remember: - The numerator is the top number of a fraction.
- The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction.
Just work through the first sheet if you find the second one too much of a challenge.
Alternatively, you can try the support task:
- Match the pictures to the words and then the fractions. This will help you with the rest of the worksheet.
- Shade the given fractions onto the shapes.
- Draw the shapes out yourself if that’s better for you.
- Check your work with the answer sheet and make any corrections.
If you want more of a challenge, try the challenge cards – these are for today and tomorrow.
Friday 05.02.21
LO: Recap Tenths
Watch: https://vimeo.com/502315833
This lesson is all about tenths.
Remember – with tenths, the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction) is always 10. It means that a whole one has been split into 10 parts.
Get 10 pieces of pasta or 10 Lego pieces or split a whole chocolate bar into 10 pieces and use this to help you work out the problems.
Questions 1 – 5 are less challenging if you are not feeling too confident about this.
Also, if you are still unsure, or just want a bit more practise, check out the website:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zmcny9q
There is a quiz and a video clip and a worksheet with answers.
You can do the support task instead of the main task:
- In the first section, shade the fraction given in the box onto the rectangle.
- In the second section, write the shaded fraction of the rectangle in the box.
- Count the squares shaded in to help you get the answer.
- Check your work with the answer sheet and make any corrections.
Remember – there are challenge cards from yesterday to continue with as well!
