Maths

L/O To recap solving a range of problems mentally.

There are mental maths questions that can be displayed on a screen. Each has a different time limit, getting longer as you go through them. Scroll through, or ask an adulty to scroll through and read them out, writing your answers down on a piece of paper. Check to see how many you get correct.

If you would like more maths, here’s a game on a maths investigation website called nrich. It will help keep your addition and subtraction skills going!

Reading activity

L.O: To read and discuss a playscript

One of the files attached is a playscript called: Little Red Riding Hood Playscript. Read it through.

What is different about a playscript compared to a story? List three things using the Tower Hamlet sentence structures to help write your answers. The 'comparison' section is the section to look at for your sentence starters.
What do you like about a play script?
What do you not like about a play script?

Keep this work in the ‘reading’ section of your folder.

SPaG

L.O: To identify features of a playscript

Once you have read the playscript. There is another attachment called: Recognising features of a playscript. This shows the first scene of the playscript: Mother’s Kitchen.

Pages 1-4 is the 1 star version (easier task) including the answers.
Page 5-8 is the 3 star version (more challenging task) including the answers.

  1. Choose which task you feel most comfortable with.
  2. Read the instructions at the top of the sheet. You will need some different coloured pens/pencil crayons.

Keep this work in the ‘SPaG’ section of your folder.

Writing activity

L.O: To use the features of a play script

Open up the PowerPoint named: Writing a Playscript PowerPoint. If you do not have PowerPoint on your computer, I have also taken screen shots of the pages you need to complete this task. This is called: PowerPoint Playscript screenshots. Go through the PowerPoint answering any questions it asks and completing the tasks it tells you about. You can do the tasks on a piece of paper.

Keep this work in the ‘writing’ section of your folder.

Wider Curriculum - Science

L.O: To investigate the effects of water resistance

Today you’ll need:

  • a tall receptacle such as a pint glass or a long, thin measuring cylinder (a bath or paddling pool  could also work)
  • ideally a ball of playdough/plasticine/blu-tac or, if you don’t have these, about 6 small, equally sized squares of foil
  • water
  • a stopwatch or timer
  • results chart (Recording Results in blog attachments or draw your own)

Water resistance is another form of friction and works in the same way as air resistance. Friction is created between the water particles and objects trying to move through it. You might have noticed how difficult it is to walk or run through the swimming pool. This is due to water resistance – all the particles of water trying to push in the opposite direction to the direction you want to move in.  It is harder to move through water than through air because the particles in liquids are much closer together.

Use what you learnt about air resistance to help you with these water resistance activities.

Activity 1: Make your playdough or foil into a shape that you think will fall as quickly as possible. We call shapes that move easily through water, streamlined. Think of the shapes of animals or vehicles that move easily through water to help you. Keep making adjustments until you find the speediest shape you can. Record your investigation in a chart with a diagram of the shape and the time it takes to fall. It would be a good idea to try each shape 3 times and find the average speed to check your accuracy.

Activity 2: Make your playdough or foil into a shape that you think will fall as slowly as possible. Again, record the results in a chart.

When you’ve done, watch this BBC Bitesize video and see if you agree. bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsxxsbk/articles/zxw6gdm

Physical Activity

You need a tennis racket (if you have one) and a ball.

Can you and a parent / carer / sibling complete the 100 volley challenge? You need to bat the ball to each other (without bouncing) 100 times! I tried this with my daughter Elsa - this is really tricky! Keep your eye on the ball and remember you are working as a team!

If you don't have a racket throw a ball against a wall and catch the ball. How many repetitions can you do? How high can you throw the ball?
