Year 5 Wider Curriculum – Week Commencing 6th July
Focus: Geography
This week we will be looking at maps and developing our map reading skills.
Monday
LO: To locate Mountains in Europe
Today you will need access to a map on the internet or an atlas if you have one at home. Have a look at today’s Powerpoint then try to locate the mountains listed.
The ** sheet involves labelling

I’ve tried to find some maps to help if you don’t have an atlas. Google maps is good,

L.O: To Locate Mountain Ranges in the World
Using skills from yesterday, let’s expand our mountain knowledge to the rest of the world. Locate the mountians on the map. You know whether you need * ** or ***
Extension – research some of the mountain ranges. You could find out about ones you are particularly interested in or you could use the fact cards included. Make a poster showing key facts about your mountain range of choice.

L.O: TO understand how tourism affects some mountainous regions
Today’s powerpoint talks about the pros and cons of tourism on mountainous regions.
Task 1 – to sort statements into + and - . Some of you will be able to decide whether this is an economic ( to do with the economy/money) impact, environmental or social.
Task 2 – use the second sheet (or a piece of paper) to write up the 4 most important impacts in each section.

L.O: To consider how people live in key mountainous regions
Pick a minimum of 2 of the mountains on the sheet and find out about how people live there.
Answer the questions as you go.
Challenge – explain why you would prefer to live near/on one particular mountain compared to another. Use language such as –
- I would prefer because…
- The disadvantage of this
- The advantage of this
- This is more favourable because
