Y5 English Week Beginning 18.01.2021

This week our English will continue to focus on the video stimulus called ‘Ride of Passage.’

Please follow the link below so that you can access the video. You can watch the video as many times as you like throughout the week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29fIGIr0cuQ

Please be aware that for English this week we have uploaded 1 PDF document the children’s learning.

Underneath, we have done a day by day summary as to which task we would like the children to complete. This summary will indicate which page of the PDF document the children’s task is on.

PLEASE NOTE, THE PAGE NUMBERS ARE WRITTEN AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH PAGE ON THE PDF DOCUMENT.

Please do not complete more than this task as the children will be doing the same work at home as they are in school and it good for us to be consistent in both school and remote learning.

Monday 18.01.2021 - page 12 and 13 PDF document

LO To build ideas and infer a character’s feelings

Please watch ‘Ride of Passage’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29fIGIr0cuQ

Task 1 –page 12

Today we would like you to focus on page 12 of the PDF document. Once you have finished watching ‘Ride of Passage’, please look at the image of the main character on page 12. Your task is to annotate everything you can see in this picture, using arrows and labels. Where possible, try to use expanded noun phrase, high-level vocabulary and figurative language to aid your description.

I’ve done one for you as an example on page 12.

Figurative language examples

Simile – Use the word ‘like’ or ‘as’ to compare e.g. ‘He was as quiet as a mouse.’

Metaphor – Say one thing is another thing e.g. ‘She is a ray of sunshine.’

Personification – Making an object or thing sound like it is alive e.g. ‘The leaves dance on the trees.’

Hyperbole – Over-exaggerating e.g. ‘These shoes are killing me!’

Please refer to the figurative language poster for extra ideas and page 2 of the PDF document for definitions of figurative language.

Task 2 – page 13

For this task, we want to think about how the character is feeling but use our ‘show not tell’ skills.

In the table on page 13, can you come up with one idea of how the main character may act that could show the reader how he is feeling, rather than telling them. Think about their body language and movements.

I’ve done one example for you.

You will find the worksheets on Page 12 and 13 of the PDF document.

We would love to see this on your Class Dojo portfolio

Tuesday 19.1.2021 – page 14 and 15 PDF document

LO To use similes to describe

Today we would like you to practise using similes.

Remember, a simile compares two things using the words 'like' or 'as'.

E.g. The lion’s roar was as loud as a thunder.

Her hair was white like snow.

Work through pages 14 and 15 of the PDF document by improving the simple sentences by adding a simile. There are a few examples on the pages to start you off.

Remember, your simile has to make sense! For example you wouldn’t say ‘The snail was as slow as a cheetah.’

You will find the worksheets on Page 14 and 15 of the PDF document.

Wednesday 20.1.2021 – page 16

LO To use expanded noun phrases

Expanded noun phrases are when we describe something using the following pattern:

Adjective, adjective noun with adjective noun

Have a look at my example:

The boy had muddy, grimy feet with chipped toenails.

You will find the worksheet for today's learning on Page 16.

We would love to see this on your Class Dojo portfolio

Thursday 21.1.2021 – page 17 and 18 PDF document

LO To plan my story

Now we have looked into writing setting and character descriptions, can you plan the story in more detail? Make sure you tick off at least three areas of the writing wheel for each paragraph of your story. Your story will focus on the video of the ‘Ride of Passage’

If you would like to re-watch the video to remind you of key details please follow the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29fIGIr0cuQ

Remember, you are just planning your story so you only need to write notes for each paragraph.

You will find the worksheets on Page 17 and 18 of the PDF document.

Friday 22.01.2021 – page 19 and 21 PDF document

LO To independently write my story.

Now it is time to write the story. Try to refer to the skills on Pages 1 and 2 of the PDF document and sprinkle them throughout all of your story. Make sure you follow your plan carefully and use this to help structure your story. You can always look back at your work from the last two weeks and magpie any useful ideas.

Try to make this a really creative piece of writing and remember to use your best handwriting

If you need lined paper for this task, please print off pages 19-21.

We would love to see these on your class dojo portfolios!

You will find the worksheets on Page 19 and 21 of the PDF document.

Extra writing challenges

Please refer to page 22 for extra writing challenges that link to the ‘Ride of Passage’.

These extra challenges are not compulsory, they are just there if you wanted to do a little more.
