Year 3 Wider Curriculum Week Beginning 29th June
Date: 26th Jun 2020 @ 1:10pm
Hello my lovelies - it's week 2 of plants. I love this topic - I do wish I were teaching it to you! Enjoy xx
Wider Curriculum – Science – Plants (2 weeks) WEEK 2
There are some practical experiments for this science topic.
Useful resources – post it notes, sellotape/masking tape, a piece of card or thick paper
Main Objectives:
- To identify and describe the features of roots, stems/trunks, leaves and flowers
- To explore what plants need to grow
- To investigate the way in which water is transported within plants
- To explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
Monday
L.O: To investigate methods of seed dispersal
On Friday we looked at the life cycle of a plant. In order for new plants to grow, their seed needs to be dispersed (moved, or spread out) See the powerpoint for loads of fun activities to do!
Tuesday
L.O: To investigate what plants need to grow
(you can do this lesson later in the week if you’re plants need more time to adapt to their growing)
Last week you were hopefully able to set up experiments to compare plants growing in light/dark warm/cold and wet/dry
How are your plants?
Task 1
Being an observational scientist – carefully draw the results of your experiment. What adjectives would you use to describe your different plants? If you weren’t able to do the experiment yourself I have included some pictures from Ben in Y3SC
Wednesday
L.O: To understand why plants need leaves
If you were able to set up a leaf experiment then today is a good day to look at the results. I’ve included some photos of previous experiments that Y3s id
Thursday
End of unit assessment
I’ve attached an end of unit assessment for plants (and answers) it doesn’t matter if you can’t print it, you can write the answers down. Give it a go. It starts with the science facts and then looks at scientific enquiry skills.
Hints –
- MRS NERG is sometimes used a way of remembering what all living things do. We didn’t use it but you still know the answer
- Variables- remember that this means the thing that changes, or doesn’t change, during an experiment. We thought about these at the start of last week when we set our experiments up.
Be resilient and give it a go – I know you can do it! If you find bits hard use the answers, but remember the rule of answer stations – don’t panic if you’ve gone wrong, work out how to get to the right answer.
Friday
Art based on Plants – close ups
Over the past few weeks, when I’ve been out and about, I’ve taken some photos of plants. I’ve also taken some from the internet.
This is a great way to look closely at detail you make not have noticed before. If you go for a walk - take a photo of a plant that interests you or use the photos included.
When you get home – zoom in! What can you notice? You might like to try and draw what you see! I’ve also included a more simple idea about drawing dandelion seeds. Have fun!
