Year 3 Maths Week Beginning 22nd June

Date: 17th Jun 2020 @ 1:49pm

Hello year 3!

Last week we looked at addition and this week we shall be looking at subtraction. We will start the week by warming up our brains with some quick fire mental arithmetic, then we will move on to revising column subtraction, then subtracting money, then tackling some word problems and finally completining a mental arithmetic paper. Again, this is intended as a recap of methods we have seen earlier on in the year.

Some of the games I have listed such as race to the moon can be played as a two player game. If you have family / friends you haven't seen for a while but are in contact with via zoom or another video calling system why don't you send them a copy of the game and your child can play over the video call with their friend or relative?

Let’s get started!

Mental Maths Monday

Task 1- Imagine you have been visited by an alien who has never heard of subtraction before. Can you explain it? What other words might the alien hear that also mean subtraction?

Task 2- This worksheet is designed to test your ability to subtract 10s. Remember the ones will stay the same when you subtract a multiple of 10.

e.g 352 – 30 = 322

There will be some practice questions where you cross the 100s. This can be trickier!

e.g 428 – 60 = 368

Worksheet 2: Play with a partner or by yourself, can you race to the moon?

CHALLENGE: Create your own race to the moon, try to include 3-digit calculations. Perhaps you could do some 2 step challenges e.g.   321+103  -  469-357? Why not challenge a relative to a game when you have created your game?

Tuesday Today we shall recap column subtraction. Just like addition, it is really important to remember that the digits need to go in the correct columns. Remember your HTOs and you’ll be fine!

There are also some sheets for you to practise setting out your column subtraction calculations. Use the PDF squared paper provided or use lined paper turned on its side.

EXTRA CHALLENGE: Have a go at the 4 problem solving and reasoning questions related to subtraction.

Wednesday

Money, money, money.

Last week you practised using money and adding up different amounts. Again if you have any real coins today would be a really great day to use them!

Please note the National Curriculum for Year 3 states that pupils continue to record £ and p separately (for example as £3 and 76 pence). The decimal recording of money is introduced formally in year 4.

Watch this video to recap subtracting money:

Please complete the worksheet for today’s work on subtracting money.

CHALLENGE: When you have finished that if you need a challenge there is another worksheet on giving change.

Thursday

Think about it Thursday. Word problems. In school we encourage children to use the problem solving ladder steps to solve word problems. The steps are: read it, filter it (highlight the important numbers and words), prep it (write out the calculation if needed), solve it and show it and prove it (check that it is correct, check the inverse calculation). There are 2 sheets, one with 2-digit addition problems and a more challenging one with 3-digit problems.

CHALLENGE: Have a go at writing your own subtraction word problem.

SUPER CHALLENGE: Finding Fifteen. This one will really get you thinking. Follow the instructions below.

Friday

Please complete the mental arithmetic paper for further practice. Answers can be recorded on paper to save on printing.

Best wishes,

Mrs Scammell :)
