Y5WH go to the Victorian Classroom
Date: 6th Nov 2019 @ 1:52pm
The children arrived at the Victorian Classroom and were greeted by Miss Sharpe. Immediately the girls were informed that ‘a woman’s place was in the home’ whereas the boys learnt ‘no labour, no bread’.
Everyone went inside, and the children paid their penny to attend school. Boys of course were afforded the privileged position of sitting near the window, where all the light was, so they could see clearly.
Next the children showed Miss Sharpe their hands to check they were nice and clean because of course ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’. The three R’s were very important so everyone used their slate pencil and slate to practise their writing. Poor Rose Martin was made to write with her left arm behind her back after Emily, the monitor, spotted her writing with her left arm.
Then it was break time and everyone enjoyed playing with the Victorian toys like whip and top, skittles and hoop and stick.
After lunch the children had the opportunity to write with an ink pen; experience what it was like to complete some of the many chores a Victorian girl might experience and play with some of the parlour games
Everyone agreed they had a wonderful day and learnt so much.
