Y5 Wider curriculum –Science - Monday 01.02.2021

LO: To explain how water and nutrients are transported within the body.

Today we are looking at why water and nutrients are important to the body and how the body absorbs and uses them.

This lesson will re-visit learning from year 4 on the digestive system as that plays an important part in how water and nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream for the body to use.

  1. Watch the video called ‘Food’s incredible Journey’ to remind yourself about how food travels through the body.

https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/36133/digestive-system

  1. Open the PowerPoint called 01.02.21 Science PowerPoint (also uploaded as a PDF). Carefully read through the PowerPoint about how nutrients and water get absorbed into the body.

Task – Open the work sheet 01.02.21 Science Worksheet. We would like you to use the information on the PowerPoint to make notes about how water and nutrients are absorbed into the body and the important part the digestive system and circulatory system play.

There is a one, two or three star option to choose from. Refer back to the PowerPoint as much as you like to make your notes.

Deepening Task –

Create a diagram and a short written explanation explaining how nutrients and water are transported around the body.

Use the notes that you have written down to support you.

You may want to refer back to the PowerPoint to see the appropriate information again.

Make sure that your diagram is clear and can be understood by others by making your handwriting neat and easy to read, and checking that your sentences make sense.

Support Task –

Open up the document labelled 01.02.21 Science Support

1. Cut out the organs below and stick them by their tabs into the correct positions on the human body. Stick the tabs down in their numbered order.

2. Then cut out the labels and match them, using their numbers, to each part of the digestive system.

3. Join your labels to the diagram with a ruled line.

4. Finally, cut out and match the functions to each part of the digestive system.

Y5 Wider Curriculum – P.S.H.E – Wednesday 03.02.21

Charlie Mackesy ‘The Boy, the mole, the fox and the horse’ book study.

The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse are four friends who share a deep, unshakable bond. Through a series of brief but important conversations, Charlie Mackesy teases universal truths and rich wisdom from the mouths of his characters, celebrating warmth and empathy. Exploring kindness through exquisite, sensitive artwork and delicate calligraphy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a moving study of friendship, kindness and the world.

  1. If you have not read the book before (or even if you have and you want to experience it again), follow the link below to listen and watch the book being read to you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81b4i9jQhck&t=297s

  1. Work through the questions on the PDF document (3.2.21 PSHE The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse) which link to certain pages of the book. We have provided an answer sheet for you to write your answers on too (3.2.21 PSHE Answer Sheet).
  2. Time to get creative!

We are going to have a go at creating our own piece of art work through the inspiration of Charlie Mackesy.

• Firstly, you must have a think about a positive message/saying that means a lot to you.

• Next, write it down as beautifully as you can (use the book for inspiration).

• After that you will have a go at drawing an image to go with it. BUT you must include the characters from the book.

The characters are:

• The boy

• The mole

• The fox

• The horse

You can use page 6 of the PDF document as inspiration for your own piece of artwork inspired by the book ‘The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse.’

Y5 Wider Curriculum – Art – Thursday - 04.02.21

LO To create a piece of optical art

Op art is short for 'optical art'. The word optical is used to describe things that relate to how we see.

Artists use shapes, colours and patterns in special ways to create images that look as if they are moving or blurring. Op art started in the 1960s and the painting below is by Bridget Riley who is one of the main op artists.

Bridget Riley, ‘Hesitate’ 1964

How does this painting make you feel?

How do you think the artist has created the optical illusion?

Task

Today we would like you to create your own piece of optical illusion art.

Using one of the YouTube links below as a guide, follow their instructions to create your own optical illusion! If you have enjoyed making one, you can follow another tutorial and do another!

Y5 Wider Curriculum – Music

Week beginning 01.02.21

Task 1

LO: To create a graphic score

Time for a bit of Doctor Who!  Delia Derbyshire swapped traditional musical instruments for electronic sounds and changed the sound of orchestral music forever!

Watch and read: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/classical-music-delia-derbyshire-doctor-who-theme/zfh792p

Now to create a graphic score:

  • Take a piece of paper (A3 is better) and place it landscape.
  • Choose 2 colours; one to represent the bass line and another for the melody.
  • Listen to the full orchestra performance again and see if you can identify the pounding bass line; draw this bass line running across the bottom of your page.  Don’t just draw a line though!  Listen and mark the shapes that represent the shape of the music.
  • Listen to the performance again and draw the famous, swooping melody.  This can cover the top half of the page, again running from left to right.
  • Now look at your final result.  This is an example of a graphic score – music which doesn’t have to be written out using notation (line and dots).

Take a picture of your graphic score and put it on Class Dojo.

Challenge

Listen to a different version: https://youtu.be/2CYDgezeQas

Which one do you prefer and why? Answer in a full sentence please J

PS When we are back together, I can’t wait to see how you are getting on with signing to “Stand By Me”: https://youtu.be/U4FGQ_XVXio

Task 2

Go onto Chrome Music Lab, Song-Maker section:

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/

You can change the instruments (bottom left) and tempo (speed) – have a play!  Can you create a piece that could be in a Doctor Who programme?

Y5 Wider curriculum - French (PPA) Tuesday

Our focus this week is going to be the French words for common drinks that you have at home.

  1. Look through the PowerPoint and have a go at the role play activity at the end. Maybe you could get a sibling or parent to play with you.
  2. I also want you to go onto the Linguascope website and do some of the activities to review what we have been learning this year.

For a challenge try to do the French Food Calculation worksheet.

There is also a video to watch that introduces drinks.
