LO: To create a free verse of poetry
Beowulf is a narrative poem. Watch this clip to see the clips about free and narrative poems https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zy4csk7
Would it be a free verse or narrative poem if we were writing as if Beowulf was speaking to the monsters during the battles? It would be free verse!
Grendel has taken his last putrid breath
He has made the air in this hall smell of rotting flesh...
Grendel's body is lying on the ground
His evil red eyes have closed for the last time.
Task
Use the descriptive words from previous lesson to write a verse of a free verse poem, (in the present perfect tense) from Beowulf’s point of view, as if he is talking aloud, describing what he sees when fighting Grendel’s mother. |
Success criteria:
- write from Beowulf’s point of view
- write it as if he is talking aloud
- think about what he sees when fighting Grendel’s mother
Challenge - can you use present perfect tense - I have, she has...
17.03.21 – Onomatopoeia
LO: To evaluate a sound poem
An onomatopoeia (Mrs Collis still can't spell that word!) is a word that copy the sound they make. Have a look at the PowerPoint and follow the links to listen to and read some Sound Poetry that is full of onomatopoeia.
Task- what sounds would Grendel and his mother make? Practise saying them and think about how you would write them down. Finally - what body actions could go with those words?

LO: To create a sound poem
Think about the work you did yesterday. Today you are going to write 4 lines of a sound poem as Grendal or Grendal's mother responding to Beowulf's attack.
This youtube clip will give you some ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ3-zmujXho
If you can, perform your poem and record it. We'd love to see it on Dojo!
