LO: Subtract 2 fractions

Watch: https://vimeo.com/507597199

Remember, you are only subtracting the numerator (the top number of the fraction).

You will also need to use your division skills to turn improper fractions into mixed numbers.

If you get to question 7 – you need to balance both sides.

Work out the subtraction calculation for each side:

E.g. 10/11 – 4/11 = 6/11

13/11 – 7/11 = 6/11

Have a go at the support task if you are feeling a bit unsure of this.

If you finish the main task, have a go at the challenge sheet.  The question numbers on this sheet are a bit strange.  It should be numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

This challenge isn’t too hard but gets you thinking about what you should have learnt and will show how confident you feel about fractions.

LO: Subtract from whole amounts

Watch: https://vimeo.com/508878193

You can change the whole number into an improper fraction first, making sure it is the same denominator as the fraction you are subtracting.

E.g. 3 – 3/5 =

*Remember - We are thinking about fifths here.

3 whole ones = 5/5 + 5/5 + 5/5 = 15/5

15/5 – 3/5 = 12/5

12/5 = 2 2/5

3 – 3/5 = 2 2/5

You can also draw out the fraction if you prefer.

3 whole ones in fifths     = 15/5

LO: Recap Fractions of a set of objects (1)

Watch: https://vimeo.com/510395871

Try and draw as many of these questions as you can to work them out.

You could also use counters, Lego or even pieces of pasta if it helps to work it out physically.

*Remember, you are splitting the amount into the denominator each time to work it out.

This is the same as dividing the amount.

E.g

¼ of 48  =

48 split into 4

48 divided by 4 = 12

¼ of 48 = 12

Thursday 04.03.21

LO:  Recap Fractions of a set of objects (2)

Watch: https://vimeo.com/510590763

You can draw as many of these questions to help you work them out.

You can also use the method of:

Divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator.

E.g. 2/3 of 15 =

15 divided by 3 = 5

5 X 2 = 10

2/3 of 15 = 10

Friday 05.03.21

LO: Calculate fractions of a quantity

Watch: https://vimeo.com/511499873

This is continuing on from yesterday.

Think about the methods you used yesterday to help you work them out.

You can draw shapes for as many of these questions as you want to.

You can also use the method of:

Divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator.

E.g. 5/6 of 18 =

18 divided by 6 = 3

3 X 5 = 15

5/6 of 18 = 15

If you are not feeling too confident about this and choose to do the support task, definitely stay on the call and work through it with Miss Crookes.
