Y4 English week beginning 22.2.21
Date: 11th Feb 2021 @ 11:25am
We are moving onto a new topic in English this week. It is based on a really lovely short film called, ‘The Little Shoe Maker’. You can watch the video here:
Monday 22.02.21
LO: To identify the key features of an advertisement
- Read through the PowerPoint about adverts.
- Look at the selection of adverts. What do you like about them? What do you dislike about them? Which is your favourite one and why? Can you spot any slogans?
- Read the advertisement about the hotel and then complete the questions. The answers are there too so you can mark your work.
Tuesday 23.02.21
LO: To analyse the film
- Watch the film again.
- Now see if you can complete a comic strip to summarise the story.
- Under each picture, write a description of what is happening. Try to use conjunctions, adverbial phrases and fronted adverbials – use the word mats to help you.
Wednesday 24.02.21
LO: To understand how adverts persuade people to buy things
- Watch the film again. Think about the shoes that Mr Botte sells.
- How would Mr Botte persuade the customer to buy his shoes? How would he need to describe the shoes? What would make them stand out? Look at the red pair of pumps. They are rather plain and dull, however by using clever description we can make them much more appealing (E.g. handmade/ genuine, soft, leather/ perfect fit).
- Fill in the speech bubbles on the worksheet with fantastic description about Mr Botte’s shoes. Use the WAGOLL to help you.
- Challenge: Can you write some sentences to describe the other seller’s shoes? Use rich descriptive language and provide useful information to persuade a buyer. (Final page on the activity sheet)
Thursday 25.02.21
LO: To use emotive language to persuade
- Look at the pictures on page 1 of the activity sheet. What are your reactions to each? What products could the images be advertising? How do the images stir emotion within the reader and persuade them to spend money on whatever the product could be?
- Choose one of the pictures and have a go at writing some sentences, using emotive language, to persuade the reader to buy your product. Use the emotive words grid to help you with your writing.
Friday 26.02.21
LO: Adding ‘ly’ to create adverbs of manner
1. Work your way through both sheets on spelling activity 1. Copy your spellings three times using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method. Then write five sentences that include some of the spelling words.
2. Choose one or two pages from spelling activity 2 and have a go at changing the words into adverbs by adding ‘ly’
