Lesson 1

LO: To look at structural features of a poem.

Read the ‘I am a Roman Soldier’ poem. 

What do you notice about the structure of the poem?

Lots of the lines start with a determiner.

See Determiners poster pdf.

Annotate the poem with any other features you spot e.g. repetition, some words have capitals

Lesson 2

LO: To suggest reasons for Author’s word choices

Read the ‘I am a Roman Soldier’ poem.

How does the mood alter as it progresses?

‘He begins really proud to be a soldier and in battle but then starts to think of his mum worrying’. Is the solider homesick? Scared of the battle? Tired of people dying?

Use a dictionary to help you complete the vocab sheet.  Choose the *  *  sheet if feeling confident or the * sheet if not so confident.

LO: To plan a poem in the style of ‘I am a Roman Soldier’

Use planning sheet to create ideas for own poem.  Choose the 1st sheet if you need more help.

Choose the 2nd sheet if you are feeling very confident.

Use the original poem to borrow ideas from.

LO: To write a poem in the style of ‘I am a Roman Soldier’

Use planning sheet from yesterday to write your own poem.

Either copy it out neatly or adapt it with any new ides you have.

Illustrate your poem.
