Tuesday 10.11.20

LO: Stand-first

A stand-first is a brief introduction in a newspaper article.  It usually follows the headline.

Read the newspaper example related to James and the Giant Peach.

Take note of slide 7 about stand-firsts – where, when, who, what, how

Write 3 headlines and stand-firsts for these stories:

  1. The 3 Little Pigs
  2. Little Red Riding Hood
  3. Goldilocks and the 3 Bears

E.g.

Goldilocks gives grizzlies grief!

A young blond girl was found breaking into a bear family’s cottage in the early hours of the morning.  The bears were not pleased to catch the little thief red-handed!

LO: Main Paragraph

Read the ‘Purpose of newspaper’ pdf and example of a main article.

Write your own article about Red Riding Hood using the template and prompts.

Make sure you include a headline, stand-first and quotes, and make sure it is written in the past tense.

Use the Newspaper word mat for ideas and spellings.

*Challenge – try and write a good conclusion, summing up what has happened, using the present tense.

Read the WAGOLL if you need some help.

LO: Conclusion

The end of your article should have a summary of the facts and answers to any questions that the article may have raised. For example, with a crime story that the police have not yet reported as being solved, you could end with a discussion of the ongoing police investigation and explain further, if more information is needed, what the police are seeking to learn and what can bring the case to a conclusion.

The conclusion must remind the reader why the article was written in the first place.

The conclusion must deal with the ‘So What’ and ‘Now What’ questions.

Good opening phrases for a conclusion might be:

This is important for… because …

At the moment, the police are still thinking about/looking into…

If you have any further information regarding…

Task:

Using the headline and stand-first from Tuesday, write a concluding paragraph for.

Goldilocks gives grizzlies grief!

A young blond girl was found breaking into a bear family’s cottage in the early hours of the morning.  The bears were not pleased to catch the little thief red-handed!

*Challenge – draw a picture of Goldilocks sneaking out or getting caught and write a quote for how she might try to explain her actions.
