Our English for the rest of the half term is based on the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. If you don't have a copy you can watch it on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU We hope you enjoy it! It is one of Mrs Collis' favourite English topics!

Lesson 1

L.O: To infer feelings and emotions

Explain that Duncan owns a box of crayons and that all the crayons have written him a letter. 

Read the red letter. How is the crayon feeling? What is the evidence?

Then read the book/watch the clip to hear the other letters. 

Task - find evidence from three letters to show the crayons are feeling. If you have the book you might like to do 2 more!

 

Lesson 2

L.O: To identify the purpose of a letter

Reread or watch the book again. Can you match the colour crayon to the emotion?

We are going to work out the purpose of the letters today. Why did the crayons write them? What did they hope to achieve? The crayons all want Duncan to treat them better, but in different ways!

Using the book (or youtube) decide what the purpose of each letter is. Can you work out what Duncan needs to do for each crayon?

 

Lesson 3

L.O: To identify the features of a letter.

What are the features of an informal letter? Find three different examples of each feature in the book.

Challenge - pick your two favourite letters and read them aloud to somebody. Can you use your voice to make it sound like the crayon is feeling?

 

Lesson 4

L.O: To identify the persuasive features of a letter

Which letter is most persuasive? White or Red? Look at the example of Oranges letter, you then need to see how Red and White try to persuade Duncan. Which do you think is the most persuasuve and why?

 

Lesson 5

Use this lesson every week to finish off! You will also have new spellings on spelling shed that you can practise. Can you write them in sentences?
