Build a Rainforest with Dr Dalrymple

Dr Sarah Dalrymple, a Conservation Ecologist from Liverpool John Moores University, came to work with Y6 to develop our understanding of the importance of the plant life in the rainforests to the local and global environments. We looked at the varied work that Sarah undertakes - from working in labs to climbing the mountains of Europe to study the plant life in a 2m squared patch of hillside. We decided that being an ecologist would be fun, dangerous, exhausting, exciting, but most of all, really important for the future of our planet.
Each class then had a practical workshop with Sarah in which we investigated plant adaptation and leaf design. We used the university’s special light sensing technology to observe how much sunlight our own leaves would capture. Our final challenge was to create a forest so dense that no sunlight could hit the ground.
Sarah was extremely impressed by the questions asked by our Y6s - especially Grace K, Eleanor F and Dylan.
