At Dobcroft, we follow the DiscoveryRE scheme. DiscoveryRE adopts an enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning-aligned to Sheffield’s agreed syllabus from SACRE. (See the file entitled ‘Enquiry based approach’.)
Using an enquiry-based model helps to develop children’s critical thinking skills; it increases their motivation to learn and enhances their knowledge, understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religious or otherwise.
‘This approach takes very seriously the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief. RE does not try to persuade but rather to inform and develop the skills with which an evaluation can take place.’
Christianity is taught in every year group, with Christmas and Easter given new treatment each year, developing the learning in a progressive way. Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism are also covered. Other belief systems, e.g Humanism, Buddhism etc, may also be discussed. (See overview)
