Year 5 Home Learning - Wednesday 29th April

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 1:38pm

Hello everyone!

What a shame the weather has dipped and we've had drizzle. We still managed to get outside a bit at school though luckily! Did you see the staff toilet roll challenge? Mrs Protano's clip really made me laugh! Mrs Scammell has had a wonderful idea since a lot of us are cooking a lot more during lockdown - if you have made a new recipe that you would recommend to someone else, why not write it out and decorate it before posting it into the 'cake' box at school - we are going to make a DJS recipe book of some of them!

I hope you are all still doing well and it has been lovely to see some of you in school this week and hear from those of you at home - thank you to children and parents for their lovely messages!

All the best,

Miss Wilson x

Lesson and Learning Objective

Task

LO: subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places

LO: Adding numbers with different number of decimal places

Search White Rose Home Learning – Year 5

Click on Summer Term Week 2, Lesson 2

The task today requires you to use your subtracting skills to subtract numbers with the same number of decimal places.  Again use place value counters and/or a place value grid to help you with the exchanging.  How about putting all these skills into context.  Maybe you could get the Argos Catalogue, start off with say £50, choose an item and deduct it from your starting figure.  How close can you get to 1p?

Now you’re going to build on all the skills you have so that you will be able to add numbers together even when there are different numbers of decimal places.  It’s really important to line up the numbers with the decimal point and put a zero in any spaces you have as place holders.  Using your estimating skills is even more important: when you look at the answer does it look right, is it a sensible answer?  For example adding 1.3 and 1.32 it can’t be 1.35 can it?

I’ve also attached an Ultimate Maths Sheet, try to complete the sheet in 90 seconds, or give yourself a challenge and reduce the time.

LO: To engage a listener using intonation and volume

Think back to our Podcasts work in Computing – what was effective when we had to record our voices to entertain an audience? Can you share what we did with somebody at home? Listen to this video clip with your eyes closed – only focus on the voice! Here’s our list of effective techniques for orally telling a story – did you get any more?

  • Loud, clear voice
  • Lots of expression in your voice
  • Different voices for characters
  • Interesting words
  • Vary the volume of your voice (loud/quiet)
  • Vary the pitch of your voice (high/low)
  • Pausing for effect

Remember your lines and being prepared for the recording

Record a section of the Robin Hood story we have been reading on an iPad/iPhone/Computer using voice recorder, retelling it using the techniques above. I bet they will sound great!

Challenge – Can you perform to a family member or video and analyse your performance against the success criteria above? What would your next step be?

Support – Choose a smaller section of the text to retell and three focus areas to perform with.

Reading

LO: To use evidence from the text

Read pages 61 – 67 then answer the questions on the attached sheet.

Wider Curriculum

LO: To explain the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction in plants

LO: To observe changes over time

Look at the attached presentation about reproduction in plants. Write your own definition for both.

Task 1 – Identify the advantages and disadvantages of both asexual and sexual reproduction using the task sheet.

Support – Use the 1 star sheet

Challenge – Write a paragraph comparing asexual and sexual reproduction – can you focus on using a range of cohesive devices and conjunctions such as ‘whereas’ or ‘on the other hand’?

Task 2 – Experiment – Look at the attached document about making a cutting. Can you help a plant to reproduce using this method? Observe the changes over time and link this back to your work on the life cycle of a plant.

Good luck with all of your learning tasks and as usual we would love to see what you have been up to!
