Y6 Wider Curriculum – Music

Week beginning 18.01.21

Task 1

LO: To learn about a composer and perform body percussion

Florence Price overcame prejudice to become the first black female composer to have her work performed by a major orchestra!

Watch and read: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/classical-music-florence-price-symphony-no1/z48rscw

In the video, the West African rhythms are re-created as body percussion.  Can you copy them?  Once you have mastered one hand, can you use both hands?!

What other repeating rhythms can you create by patting and slapping your arms, legs and chest?  How about including stamping with your feet?  When you’ve finished, have a go at copying this: https://youtu.be/D1o_Xnx6_e8    Have fun!

PS don’t forget to continue learning to sign to “You’ve got a friend in me!” https://youtu.be/CSQ8-TAA3xI

Task 2

LO: To listen to a performance and identify the instruments

Last summer, a group of children, young people and adults recorded themselves playing ‘All You Need Is Love’ by the Beatles.   All the separate recordings have been put together to make one ‘virtual’ performance.  Have a listen. What do you think?  How many instruments can you name? There are a few that you may not recognise. Can you guess what they are? Look at the credits to see if you’re correct!  https://youtu.be/yW3WC5bYrAY

Y6 PSHE/Online Safety - Wednesday 20.1.21

Read through the file labelled PSHE Guidance - this has things to think about. You don't have to print this file if you are able to read it on screen.

Complete the task in the file labelled PSHE Task - this should be printed and stuck in your book. If you can't or chose not to print at home, you can recreate the sheet in your book.

LO: to consolidate the effects of air resistance

NB: this lesson involves a practical investigation. It will be helpful to have the following items: bin bags, cardboard, big clothes, anything you are allowed to use that could increase your air resistance.

·Watch the following live lesson. Complete the worksheets when asked to. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/live-lessons/terrific-scientific-forces-live-lesson/z7nbkmn

·Before you create our own outfit to slow you down, time yourself running a lap (or maybe 2) of your garden. To ensure your results are accurate, run the same distance three times and take an average of your times (add them and divide by three).

·Use whatever you can find at home (bin bags, cardboard, big clothes, anything you are allowed to use) to create yourself an outfit that will SLOW YOU DOWN. (To keep safe, only attach things above the waist and have nothing dangling around your legs).

·Time yourself running the same distance again, this time, wearing your outfit. Time yourself three times and take an average speed (add them up and divide by three). Complete the Costume Design Sheet and upload to your portfolio (include a photo if you can).
