Year 6 WB 15th June Wider Curriculum

Date: 9th Jun 2020 @ 4:01pm

WB: 15TH June Overview

Hi year 6,

Miss Taylor here this week! Well done for completing your French and your RE home learning so far this half term. This week will be split between finishing your history topic of World War 2 and catching up with a little bit of science classification from earlier in the year. I hope you enjoy it.

Further details of activities and resources are attached for each day. Just note that for the science learning you will need a selection of leaves so think about collecting some next time you are out for a walk. 4-8 different leaves would be ideal.

Parents - You may find it easier to print all the pages (so you have it all together) but if you want to save on printing, each day references the pages which may require printing.

Monday - History WW2

Aim: to understand the role of propaganda

Today you will read an information sheet to learn what propaganda is. You ill then look through a few examples of propaganda used during WW2 and answer a few questions on each image.

After that you will look at a piece of WW2 propaganda that has been adapted to fit the messages linked to our current lockdown.

Finally, you’ll be asked to either adapt a WW2 poster or create your own poster linked to the messages that we have had recently from our current government.

Pages to print: Page 3 -7 and page 9 (a printer friendly version of pages 3-6 can be found on page 10)

Tuesday - History WW2

Aim: to compare an aspect of WW2 with modern life

Today you’ll be learning how the events of World War 2 affected the life of a young girl named Anne Frank. You’ll watch this video to learn more about her https://www.annefrank.org/en/anne-frank/who-was-anne-frank/

After that you will need to read the section about A Day in the Life in the Secret Annex and use his website to have a look around https://www.annefrank.org/en/anne-frank/secret-annex/.

Finally, use the Venn Diagram and prompt questions to compare Anne’s time hiding in the Secret Annex to your time in Lockdown. Whilst the reasons for staying in are very different, you might find that the effects on your life and perhaps some thoughts, worries, loss of freedoms are similar.

Pages to print: Either page 6 (main task with support) or page 7 (challenge task)

Wednesday - History WW2

Aim: to understand that major events in history can leave a legacy

Today we’ll be looking at how and why our marvellous NHS was created.

Firstly read the information sheet about the introduction of the NHS and then watch the videos here to bring this to life a bit https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/how-did-britain-build-the-nhs/zvhmkmn .

You’ll then watch another short video showing memories of medica professionals who worked as the NHS was being introduced – follow he guidance for note taking.

Finally, you’ll be asked to produce an information page about life before and after the NHS.

Pages to print: Page 3 and 4 (page 5 for support)

Thursday - Science Classification

Aim: to identify trees based on observable characteristics

The first thing you will need for this lesson is some leaves so if you haven’t already done so, take someone in your family for a walk to the woods or the park and collect around 6 different looking leaves.

Your first task is to use the identification sheet to see if you can identify the tree the leaf came from.

Secondly, you’ll need to look more closely at the features of the leaves and compare the leaves.

Finally, you’ll complete a table to show the characteristics of each leaf you’ve collected.

Pages to print: Page 4 and 5

Friday - Science Classification

Aim: to draw a classification key

Firstly, you’ll look at an example of a classification key.

Secondly, you’ll create a series of closed questions (questions that have yes/no answers) that divide your leaves into two groups until each leaf is in it’s own group.

Finally, you’ll use these questions to draw your own classification key.

Pages to print: Page 2 and 3 initially and when it comes to drawing your own diagram either draw your own with no printing, print page 6 for a 4/2 split after question 1 or page 7 for a 3/3 split after question 1 (hopefully this will make more sense once you get that far!).
